How to Connect Orbi with your Gateway as an Access point

When you set up your NETGEAR Orbi router as an access point, you use it to connect to the internet instead of your existing router's WiFi. Read this guide to learn all the steps you need to take to set up your NETGEAR router as an Orbi AP mode. 


What's an Access Point?


An access point is a device on a wireless network that lets devices connect to a local area network. Access points are used to increase the number of people who can connect to a wireless network and make it cover a larger area.

From a router to an access point, a high-speed Ethernet cable runs. The access point turns the wired signal into a wireless one. Access points usually only have wireless connectivity, which they use to connect to end devices through WiFi.


To Turn Your NETGEAR Orbi Into an Access Point, Do the Following:


  • First, you need to use an Ethernet cable to connect your Orbi router to the LAN port of your existing router.

  • Connect your device to the router network and ensure the internet is working.

  • Next, you'll need to open a web browser on your computer, phone, or another device.

  • You must use the URL/address bar to get to the orbilogin web address orbilogin.com.

  • This address will take you to the screen where you sign in to Orbi.

  • Type the username and password for admin by default. You can look at the label on the back of your Orbi router to see the default username and password.

  • The default user name and passwords for Orbi are admin and password. Both of those are capitalized words.

  • When you click the Login button, the BASIC Home page will open.

  • Here, you have to choose the "Advanced" option, then "Advanced Setup," and then "Router/AP Mode."

  • Router/AP Mode will open on a new page.

  • You'll see a radio button labeled "AP Mode." Click on it.

  • The page will change based on the IP Address:


  1. Dynamic from the existing router: While this router is in Orbi access point mode, a new IP address will be given to it by the other router on the network.

  2. Use a fixed IP address: This is not something we recommend. In this option, you have to assign the IP address by hand, which requires a high level of technical skill.


How to Finish Setting up an Orbi Router?


If you bought a new NETGEAR Orbi router or are moving the one you already have to a different place. To finish setting up the Orbi Router, you can do the following: -




  • Start by unplugging your Internet modem. If it runs on a battery, take it apart.

  • Change the order. Then, connect the modem to the wall.

  • Connect your modem to the yellow port on your router using an Ethernet cable.

  • The next step is to plug your Orbi router into a wall outlet.

  • When turned on, the Power LED will be solid white and pulse white.

  • Then, to get the best WiFi coverage, you need to put the Orbi satellite in the middle of the house.

  • Now plug the Orbi satellite into an electrical outlet.

  • In the same way, make sure that the Power LED on the Orbi satellite is on when it is turned on.

  1. Solid Blue: This means that the signal is good.

  2. Solid Amber: You should try to move it closer because it might be too far away.

  • Enter the WiFi network name (SSID) and password that has already been set. It's written on a label stuck to the Orbi router's back.

  • You can connect your computers and mobile devices that can use WiFi.

  • To set up your Orbi WiFi network, use the Orbi app or go to orbilogin.com.

  • Once the setup is done, the ring LED on the Orbi router turns off.
